Catgut is a natural absorbable surgical thread, obtained from the small intestine of cattle, more specifically, from the outer envelope know as the serous membrane.

The tissue of this envelope is made up of collagen molecules forming long longitudinal fibres which endow the tissue with good tensile strength.

Catgut is obtained from strips of this tissue, referred to as serosae, which are cleaned, chemically processed, assembled and dried so as to form a pseudo-monofilament, the dimension of which varies according to requirements
